fabric were in my blood from an early age. Exploring the outdoors of my hometown and the iconic architecture of nearby Chicago aroused a love of patterns found in Nature’s essential forms, and repetition of decorative elements of the built environment. At the same time, second-hand Vogue magazines awakened an interest in avant-garde fashion and the seductive qualities of fabric. After a career in urban planning and time raising my daughter, I circled back to the world that excited me as a child. While experimenting with block printing for several years I discovered surface pattern design and immediately found myself at home. I live in beautiful Rhode Island, and create repeat patterns and designs for licensing, sale and commission. LaRubia Design is a manifestation of my creative side — a playful reference to a puckish spirit and fearless younger self. I’m an observer at heart.
